Over the past few weeks, we’ve been featuring an exciting student series on our Instagram page! As part of my statistical consulting course, students translated core survey methodology into practical, visually engaging tips for crafting effective questionnaires. From avoiding biased wording to structuring clear response scales, their posts highlighted a fundamental truth in research: the quality of your data is only as good as the design of your questionnaire.
This assignment was a great reminder of something I see all the time in consulting: good data starts long before any analysis happens. Designing a questionnaire always looks deceivingly simple until you sit down to write one. It’s so easy for tiny nuances in wording or question flow to unintentionally skew responses or make downstream analysis trickier than it needs to be.
An Open Invitation
The early-stage design is where statistical consulting can be the most fun and impactful. I always love talking through questionnaire drafts with colleagues, researchers, and students.
If you are currently working on a survey, building a data collection plan, or just trying to figure out how to translate a broad research question into specific items, please feel free to reach out! Whether you want to:
- Double-check your question wording for clarity or bias,
- Chat about layout and response options to keep participants engaged, or
- Just brainstorm ideas before you start drafting…
…you are always welcome to stop by the Statistics Help Desk or connect with us at the Statistical Consulting and Survey Research Unit. You definitely don’t need a finished draft—some of the best research conversations start with just a rough idea and a notebook.
In the meantime, if you haven’t seen the students’ posts yet, head over to Instagram to check out their work! I couldn’t be prouder of the creative energy they brought to this project.
